Modeling and control of hybrid AC/DC power systems.

IIT is currently involved in several projects related to the development of HVDC systems as crucial partners for classical HVAC systems. IIT’s aims at proposing, analyzing, designing, and validating HVDC-based grid architecture concepts that enable the deployment of flexible, reliable and resilient widespread AC/DC transmission grids to ease the necessary European energy transition. A HVDC-based grid architecture concept is a set of technological solutions (topology, technological components, operation algorithms) that seek to "strengthen the existing transmission network to meet future transmission system needs using HVDC transmission”

In particular, the research project carried out by the candidate will focus on: Improvement of existing tools for the analysis and design of hybrid AC/DC transmission systems; and modeling resilience and reliability-oriented simulation and control of AC/DC systems, including the connection with a external cascading simulation of events. All this would require extension of tools already developed by Comillas (RMS simulator and Small Signal Stability Toolbox. The candidate will collaborate in the definition of the scope, granularity requirement, functionalities, and needs of the tools, and in the definition of test systems.

This activity is embedded into research projects HVDC-Wise (a HorizonEurope project) and TED02021-306108-C22 (a project included in “Strategic Projects Oriented to a Digital and Ecological Transition” 2021 under the coverage of the Spanish Transformation and Resilience
