Flexibility and Digitalisation of Electricity Distribution Networks

We seek a motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our research team working on the cutting-edge topics of flexibility and digitalisation in electricity distribution networks. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing our understanding and development of innovative solutions to enhance the flexibility, efficiency, and resilience of modern electricity grids through digital technologies. The candidate will collaborate on national and international R&D projects.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of power systems, renewable energy integration, and smart grid concepts.
  • Experience with modelling, simulation tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, OpenDSS), or digital technologies (e.g., machine learning, blockchain) is an advantage.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken).

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on the integration of flexible resources (e.g., demand response, distributed energy resources) into electricity distribution networks.
  • Explore the role of digitalisation, including advanced data analytics, IoT, in enabling flexibility and enhancing grid operations.
  • Develop and validate models for network planning and operation, considering regulatory, market, and technical aspects.
  • Collaborate with industry stakeholders and academic partners to ensure practical applicability of research outcomes.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present results at international conferences.

What do we offer?

Full-time contract to carry out research projects with complementary training activities.

This modality allows the Research Assistant to establish a very close professional relationship with the companies with which he/she collaborates, thus nourishing his/her research with the experience accumulated during the projects.
Although this modality does not necessarily require to enroll in any program, the Research Assistant can apply for a PhD during the first two years.
The Research Assistant is hired each year for a maximum period of 6. If he or she is not enrolled in a PhD program the contract cannot exceed two years.
The gross salary for the first year is € 30,555.87 for the year 2024. In addition, the IIT covers 90% of the cost of training activities and the Research Assistant can enjoy all the advantages offered to Comillas students (Sports, Cultural Activities, Library, etc.).
