Modelling electric vehicles for emerging markets and demand response mechanisms

The electric power system is undergoing significant changes driven by decarbonization, digitalization, and decentralization. Novel mechanisms are under development to engage customers in supporting network operations in a cost-efficient manner. This thesis aims to develop innovative models for integrating distributed energy resources into the new markets for the electricity sector. The focus is on modelling electric vehicles to capture their behaviour when participating in demand response and electricity markets. To achieve this, the thesis employs quantitative analysis by modelling and simulating different market designs and scenarios, studying the impact of different product parameters and interactions with upstream markets. Conducting a quantitative assessment of market functioning in realistic scenarios is crucial for formulating recommendations to enhance value creation, facilitate the ongoing energy transition, and drive innovation in the electricity sector.
