Summary:

This paper presents initial results in the investigation of the dependence of coherent areas and inter-area modes on the operating condition of a large power system. This study is part of a joint effort of IIT and Iberdrola I to assess the feasibility of using the Selective Modal Analysis (SMA) methodology for on line computation of the oscillatory modes in large power systems. The test cases evaluated have the value that they are true pictures of the Iberdrola I power system as seen from its state estimator.

Keywords: Small signal stability, coherent areas, inter-area oscillations, selective modal analysis
