How much electricity storage does the energy transition need? The critical role of hydro availability, demand flexibility, and regulation

Este trabajo evalúa la cantidad óptima de almacenamiento que necesitaría el sistema eléctrico español a lo largo de la transición energética, en 2030 y 2050 (con un sistema totalmente descarbonizado). Utilizando el modelo abierto OpenTEPES de expansión de la generación, encontramos resultados interesantes, en particular que el volumen óptimo de almacenamiento no recupera sus costes.


English layman's summary:

This paper assesses the optimal amount of storage that the Spanish power system will need along the energy transition, in 2030 and in 2050 (where all the system will be decarbonized). Using the open-source OpenTEPES generation expansion model, our results offer interesting insights, in particular that the optimal storage level will not recover its costs.
