Summary:
Recent trends toward electrification of energy consumptions and the exploitation of renewable energy sources (RES) are driving a revolution in power distribution systems. The uncertainty introduced by RES, due to the unpredictability of the resources, together with increasing loads, can generate contingencies not previously considered. One possible solution is to exploit the flexibility offered by the resources along the network. Such flexibility can be taken from elements of the electrical network but also from the interactions with other energy systems (e.g., gas and/or heating system) exploiting the sector coupling paradigm. In such multi energy system, it becomes essential to manage the uncertainty provided by the multitude of resources involved. There are various methodologies in the literature in this regard, and many of them require statistical knowledge of the nature of uncertainty. An alternative solution is robust optimization. In the paper, a linear robust programming model is developed that allows optimal exploitation of the flexibility offered by resources to the system operator. Different resources are considered, such as photovoltaics, cogenerators, and heat pumps.
