Using demand response and flexible generation to reduce uncertainties in system operation

Resumen:

Variable generation sources such as wind are being integrated into today’s electricity systems and add more uncertainty to the system. Furthermore, demand peaks keep growing and the system must provide operating reserves for different eventualities: variations in intermittent energy production and demand as well as failures in generation equipment. Luckily these new generators and demands get ever more intelligent in their controllability. To operate distributed energy sources such as Renewable Energy Sources and demands the concept of aggregating many small actors into one large entity is appearing. The aggregation of various agents in the form of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) has many advantages: these small players may participate in markets as part of a VPP or they may be independant from the market as VPPs may be providing electricity to the local loads. VPPs with various demands and distributed generations are analysed here. It will be studied how an adoption of the concept of VPPs is able to reduce uncertainties and how this influences reserve requirements and system operation.
